The start of something beautiful?

Published on November 22nd, 2010

It’s been an amazing few days for me re. mothing and I can only hope it’s the start of  a fruitful, long and meaningful relationship with me and my moth…

It all started with a phone call from Simon (eagle eye) Reynolds who had spotted a picture of Ninjario in all it’s glory in this month’s edition of Yachts and Yachting, advertising the Royal Torbay Yacht club.

Next surprise came with the Hayling Training Event at the weekend..

Saturday was back to gybe school for me as I’m clearly doing some bits right some of the time but without any consistency at all so thankfully having Mike Lennon, Ricky Tagg and Mike Cooke alongside in a RIB being able to tell you straight away what you are doing wrong was just a godsend.

Body positioning was a big problem for me which was why it was so hit and miss. The biggest thing to come out of it all was Graham Simmonds “Meerkat” which is now the term used for the position you should be in when exiting a gybe (if done correctly)

But more on the training weekend to follow…

Sunday came and this little beauty appeared out of nowhere…

Grand Prix Series 2010 Most Improved Trophy - WOW!

I can’t really describe my feelings on this… over 10 years ago I got nominated for a MOBO award and went to the ceremony and performed etc. and I must say, that didn’t mean as much to me as getting this trophy did! I was kind of stunned as it came out of nowhere! I guess it’s a testament to the UK class association’s commitment to training people like me and spending time on the water amongst other sailors.

I shall treasure this cup for many many years to come as I feel it’s kind of special and hopefully the start of something special.

The last pic speaks for itself I think!

The Moth Equivalent to the Pall Mall Gentleman's Club

All I’m going to say is three things on the subject… Legendary full cooked english breakfasts, Underfloor heating in the changing rooms with uber hot showers and the biggest gathering of the top UK moth fleet in one place… I sense a moth training academy coming on…

The trophy could not go to a better chap! Well done. And as for the Meerkat position…everytime I land a good gybe now I do my best Meerkat impression and say “Simples! tch! tch!”

Good to have you on board at Hayling – the new foiltown!
