Ninjaville – Chapter 13 – Revelations

Published on March 25th, 2010

Well here is what I’ve been keeping to myself for a while… Super comfy deck grip taken from the world of SUPs (Stand Up Paddleboards) It’s made of 5mm EVA foam, super durable, light and non absorbent.

It made perfect sense to me that like with all the latest windsurf boards and more recently SUPs, comfort on the deck is important and I think this should be the same in the moth. This idea is aimed at the beginner to intermediate that will still make mistakes and end up scrabbling around in the boat.

It also applies to us masters who have rickety old knees and would like a little bit of a respite when sailing these machines!

I think I’m on the right track as I noticed a few of the high performance boats at the Dinghy show are now using it in various places on the decks.

As far as I can tell there is no disadvantage and in terms of advantages it was plus plus plus… easier to maintain, easier to replace and easier to apply in the first instance and negligible weight difference.

Next up is the age old problem which annoyed me… So we have these state of the art, all carbon machines and we still use standard bungs for the tanks? No no no… Introducing the windsurfing release valve…

This little beauty sits in the transom and is the same valve you will find in a windsurf board. This one is stainless steel but I believe on the continent they are doing anodised aluminium, both light and bling with the colour options.

The valve screws in like a normal bung complete with a rubber o-ring but the difference is it’s compact and looks uber cool!

The ideas aren’t exactly ground breaking but like tescos.. every little helps!

Once the boat is launched, I’ll be concentrating entirely on the retractable wand system invented by Mike Lennon.. I want to develop that idea and refine as much as possible as I think it’s the most useful system for sailing in chop and swell but that is a few months away as it’s only in sketch phase at the moment.

If you’re on the deck you are doing it wrong! As for bungs – they’re a bit retro, better to not have any…

    Hi Phillippe,
the o-ring needs a little housing because after a short time it gets wider and will fell of the screw. Love your blog and you seem to be quick in building the boat!
    Greetings, Harald
