I’ve now had the opportunity to tamper with a mach 2 and found out quite a few interesting bits.
There is a bow modification which has been doing the rounds and I’ve just carried it out on Si Proper’s boat.
Basically some of the boats have had the two tangs rip out so as a precaution people are doing the mod.
Interestingly, the front end of the mach 2 is pretty solid up around the forestay fitting so it’s surprising that they rip out. It may have been the older ones or something?
The clear carbon finish is complemented with a generous layer(s) of clear lacquer and I learned a lot about clear lacquer finishing.
I’m really pleased with the end result as it’s invisible which is what I always try to aim for. Thanks to Simon for offering up his boat.

Impressive way to avoid the tangs ripping out, cut them out beforehand and magically, no problem, though no tangs might be a handicap for a bit. Have been “looking” at corrosion on two of the mechanism hold down bolts, (two nuts & stud have fallen off, now held on with port side only. Any sign of that occuring to others?
Now for the big set of tangs to fill the tube!
Hi Rob,
The final fitting includes a spliced D12 SK78 loop that goes through the top hole and is held in place via the main horizontal hole.
good god man!
Buy yourself a dremel 9931 tungsten carbide toothed (tapered) cutter and do a plunge cut next time.
It looks like you cut(hacked)that first hole with a wet fish!!!
LOL Hi Marty, Thanks for that little gem of a tip! You’re right, it does look a little shocking!
But Mach 2′s don’t break?!
