I’ve always loved some of the more inventive expressions that have come to light over years..
“Putt from the rough” always makes me laugh, as does “drink from the furry cup..” but one that has stuck in my mind most recently and was introduced to me by one ex world champion windsurfer is “TIME ON THE WATER dude” and that to me puts an end to all the questions about one equipment rules.
Let’s face it and I’m sure Bora will agree.. He didn’t win the worlds by dicking around with quivers of foils and rigs. Au contraire, he specifically stuck with his training rig which flies in the face of the debate on “one equipment”
Bruce recently reported that he’d started nailing his foiling gybes (and gave us those sexy videos to prove it)
So what does he and Bora have in common? No, their performance increase was not down to multiple gear changes, it was “TIME ON THE WATER dude”
When I was a windsurfer, I used to know two guys at Queen marys. One was loaded and worked in the city, the other was a student and close friend. The loaded guy had all the latest F2 Peter Thommen special edition slalom boards and Neil Pryde rigs as used by Bjorn Dunkerbeck (multiple world champion). The funny thing is my student friend was always first on the water and always first in. This was because he’d rig up his one sail whatever the conditions whereas our cash cow friend would piss around with rig and fin sizes.
My friend was always first in because our cash cow friend couldn’t gybe.
Moral of the story….no matter how much money you throw at something you can’t beat…. “TIME ON THE WATER dude”
I’m off sailing shortly..
